We have to report the sad news that Tony Butler who was Head of Art from 1959 until 1987 passed away on 8th January, 2010.

 

Tony Butler left the School in the summer of 1987 after 28 years in charge of the Art Room. He qualified at the Liverpool College of Art and after teaching in St. Helens took up the post at Birkenhead School in 1959.

 

He was always a practising artist with his work being exhibited locally. As a teacher he became involved in many other disciplines apart from painting;modelling, printing and pottery were a few that many OBs will recall having attempted with varying degrees of success.

 

He was always a keen golfer and did much to encourage the development of golf as an option in the School. He was rewarded by a notable triumph in the Aer Lingus English Cup.

 

His other hobby was gardening.
