After Birkenhead School he studied at Oriel College, Oxford. In his working life, he was an executive of national trade and employers' federations in various industrial and commercial sectors, notably the wool and concrete manufacturing industries, all his working life. His last appointment was as Chief Executive of the British Precast Concrete Foundation. He was also dedicated to and actively involved in the Boys' Club movement. He died in Switzerland in March 2010.
